Not Ready For This

Jonathan just climbed out of his crib. And fell on the floor. And then came to find me in the shower. I am not ready for this!!!

And yet, his mattress is as low as it will go. Any suggestions? Anyone have any success with crib tents?

GET A CRIB TENT.

Yes, I am meaning to yell. We made the HORRIBLE HORRIBLE mistake of transitioning them out of cribs at 16 months when Nate started climbing out. If I can undo one and only one parenting mistake, it would be transitioning them too early.

IT WAS A NIGHTMARE!!!!!

Would you like to know when the nightmare ended? A month ago when we started having them nap in separate rooms!!!

(And I work outside the home so we only had to deal with it 2 days a week.)

(In the meantime, put doorknob locks on the inside of his room door.)

Andrew is doing the same thing ... and it is driving me crazy. And although he is older than Jonathan, he is no where near ready for a bed! Let me know what you try and what works and what doesn't.

I hear duct tape is amazing stuff....

I'm sorry. Sarcasm seeps from my pores.

Noah went to a toddler bed right after his second birthday so we could free up the crib for our daughter who had been sleeping in a pack n play.

It was hard, but I needed the crib so a crib tent wouldn't have worked for our situation, but I think they look ingenius.

But I don't know a thing about them.

I'm a bad commenter.

I was just going to say, dial up 1-800-ASK-LAURAC, but she already commented. She's a wise woman.

We are doing everything humanly possible to keep the boys in their cribs for as long as possible. Our problem is, they climb and then get stuck (which looks painful!) in the middle of the night.

I think the crib tents are a good idea and, most importantly, a child-proofed door knob!

Once we move the boys into their toddler beds, we are buying one of those video monitors...although I'd like to have one now to see the shananigans they pull...it's funny enough just 'hearing' them over the monitor...it would be hilarious to see them.

Good luck, Krissy. May the force be with you!

I used crib tents for my twins and loved them. They bought me one more year of good naps. I would totally recommend them, totally worth every penny.
Sigh. Yet another thing I said I wouldn't do...then I had twins.

I have multiple friends who swear by crib tents. And they say their kids like it because it makes them feel cozy.

I also have other friends whose kids climbed out of their cribs, realized it hurt, and stopped doing it.

We are so, so happy ours are still in cribs. We often say, what will we do when they are in beds and free to move around? So do what you can to delay it!

One other thought -- would he do a sleep sack? Because maybe the decreased leg mobility would help keep him from climbing?

Oh no! Ahhh, I wouldnt be ready for that either! Im sorry!!!
Hannah wasnt much of a climber, but when she turned two we changed her "crib" into a toddler-bed-with-rails, so that she could get in and out by herself. She wasn't incredibly interested in escaping though...
I've never used a crib tent, but it does sound worth a try!

Hi :)
I changed my twins from cribs to toddler beds at around 22 months.....I'll have to be sure to check the blog for that correct age....but one day Porter fell out of his crib and I had to immediately get the beds. They would freak with the crib tents. Anyway, the first night they slept great. Yeah it was something different but they both loved it. They are still in them and will probably be in them until they are 3.5 or so.
Just letting you know the experience wasn't bad. Now, yes, they have the ability to get out. Yes, mine have done this and continue to do this about 50% of the time (usually its the boy). but they know. We have peep holes on the doors and I spy on them and the minute their toes touch the ground it's "Back in bed please" lol They look around like "What?" Oh and the get super territorial about their beds. At least mine did.
If you're intesested you can see the pics and my blogging about it in March 2008 on my blog.

Caleb climbed out of his crib once, and that very afternoon I took it apart and put him in a toddler bed. Yes, he can get out, but he is learning about boundaries and limits and obedience, each and every time I escort him back to his room. Use a gate in the doorway if you need to keep him in the room. Sure, I will come in and find him playing with toys instead of sleeping, but it's just part of growing up and learning what mom and dad expect. Better to have him getting out of bed than falling out of a crib. I haven't heard a lot about crib tents, but I tend to think all those baby gadgets are unnecessary and waste of money. Hope he stays put in bed for you!

Check out Dr. Weissbluth's - "Healthy Sleep Habits/Happy Child" He has a chapter where he discusses the sleep tent, the use of it, toddlers climbing out of the crib, the small percentage ratio of a child actually hurting themself climbing out, etc. GREAT helpful resource all around. Just had to refer to the book again for my own sleep issues with my kiddos.
